**HISTORY - ELSTERNWICK**

A community needs a home and a home is a place where there is comfort in history. Elsternwick has a wonderful unique human history spanning many thousands of years. The first wave of arrivals to this land learned to live within it’s resources. These resources were generally bountiful according to the relationship between their belief, their culture and the land.

Over the last few hundred years people have come to Australia from a variety of far away lands. Lands very different than those that came earlier and yet like those first arrivals are finding the culture and beliefs they bought with them developing and changing to fit in with this young countries emerging character, something uniquely Australian.

This has led to many misunderstandings between old and new, geographically and generationally. The adversity that faced early settlers and their struggle against them has helped forged our modern identity, the repercussions on the original inhabitants equally so.

It is when we look back over history that we see our actions and their results, it is with these recordings of outcomes of people thoughts and ideas that help us plan better for the future, for in our past lies an elegant future if we look close enough.

These history pages are a result of what we have found from a collection of resources that defines the land we walk on, we live within and our community calls home, our suburb Elsternwick.
